The italian expression “Figurati” (fee-GOO-rah-tee) is highly versatile, with it’s meaning dependent on its context.

1. "You're welcome" Said back after someone thanks you, used in place of prego.

  1. Grazie per l'assist!
  2. Figurati. Non c'è di che.

  1. "Thanks for the assist!"
  2. "Don't mention it."

2. Positive surprise ("can you believe it?"). Delight, wonder.

"Can you believe we saw Lamine Yamal yesterday?!"

3. Absence of surprise, sarcastic tone.

Figurati se il nostro attaccante ripiega in difesa a dare una mano.

"Imagine our striker tracking back on defense to lend a hand" (Keep dreaming.)

4. Skepticism / disbelief ("yeah, right, no way").

Figurati se riesci a prenotare un campo da calcio qui a New York, tanto sono già tutti presi

“Forget about booking a soccer field here in New York, they’re all already taken”

5. Improbability / difficulty ("good luck with that"). How hard or unlikely something is.
